What level of organizing experience do I need to be accepted into the program?

Whether you’re a campaign veteran who wants to learn more about the latest innovations in grassroots organizing in the United States, or a new organizer with great leadership skills and a clear vision for an organizing project you’d like to start, this program is designed for you. We believe that the diverse perspectives and backgrounds of our attendees will bring great value and contribute to the effectiveness of the 270///360 training program.

Do I have to be a political organizer to attend?

No. We’re looking for organizers with strong vision for what the power of grassroots organizing can do for a community, a nation, and the world. Whether your focus is on electoral organizing or issue-based community work, we’re focused on providing you with the tools and experience you’ll need to make a positive impact. That said, organizers should expect an emphasis on organizing in an electoral context, as they will complete their field assignments on Democratic campaigns.

What topics will be covered?

270///360 will provide an opportunity for organizers to learn from leaders in the following fields:

• Grassroots Organizing

• Communications

• Digital Engagement

• Data and Analytics

• Management and Leadership

• GOTV (Get Out the Vote)

What will I be doing during my 5-week campaign field assignment?

Trainees in the field will work on Democratic Campaigns around the country, and will get the “360 experience” as they explore different aspects of grassroots campaigns through hands-on experience in:

Community Organizing - Trainees will work with their mentors to identify and work with key community leaders and volunteers as they implement campaign strategy at the local level – persuading and turning out voters to win on Election Day.

Neighborhood Team Development - Trainees will work with their mentors to empower and manage strong teams of volunteer leaders. This includes participating in volunteer recruitment, one-on-one meetings, goal-setting and volunteer training.

Online Organizing - Trainees will work with their mentor to learn the best tactics for using email campaigns, Twitter and Facebook interactions to support in-person organizing efforts and influence voter persuasion and turnout.

Direct Voter Contact - Trainees will get extensive hands-on experience in talking directly to voters. Through phone calls and door-knocking, trainees will learn the best methods for voter persuasion and voter turnout.

GOTV (Get Out the Vote) - Trainees will be in the field for the most exciting part of any campaign – the last 5 weeks before Election Day, and Election Day itself. You’ll learn what it takes – from targeting the right kinds of voters to mobilizing your volunteer structure – to optimize voter turnout for your candidate.

During the 5-week field assignment, trainees will be paired with a staff mentor on a Democratic campaign to regularly discuss progress to goals, challenges, solutions, and key takeaways.

Can I choose a specific campaign for my field assignment?

All of our trainees will be paired with an important Democratic campaign in the United States that is successfully using grassroots tactics to engage voters. Geographic preferences voiced during your interview will be taken into account but may not always be honored.

Is this a full-time commitment?

Yes – trainees will be expected to devote their attention full-time to learning and organizing throughout the duration of the program. The Chicago training will take place between 9:00am and 6:00pm, with optional social activities afterward. During the field assignment, trainees will be expected to follow full-time campaign hours.

What is 270 Strategies?

We build winning campaigns using grassroots organizing, digital savvy, and effective analytics.

270 Strategies is a next-generation consulting firm that is redefining how companies and organizations build winning campaigns. We believe effective, 21st century campaigns must integrate people-centered, grassroots organizing with smart digital strategies and a data driven approach. We’re changing the way our clients manage their strategies and meet their goals - and changing the world in the process.

We help companies and organizations do big things.

Unlike traditional consulting firms that focus exclusively on marketing and offer standard public affairs services, 270 Strategies uses the lessons we’ve learned after years leading the Obama organization to help our clients connect key constituencies, design innovative programs, and put their ideas into action.

We believe in the power of grassroots organizing.

270 Strategies was born of the basic belief that grassroots campaigns can change the world. We named our firm “270” for the number of electoral votes required to win the presidency. Our team used grassroots organizing to achieve our strategic goals on both historic Obama campaigns - and we help our clients do the same.
